Mine was the same- not even close. Just try to remember where it is now, and then periodically check back. If you really want to, you can loosen the set screw and pull the lever of the spline and rotate it and slide it back on. Just remember that you want it a little less than 90 degrees (a little aft of straight down) when you are breaking (that'll give you the best angle of pull). The way it works is that the spline is flat on each side of the shaft (inside the wheel). The shoes "hinge" at the front, and sit flat in the spline sides at the rear, when you pull the lever, it rotates the spline, forcing the shoes apart against the inside of the wheel. Pretty crappy system, but it's all we've got back there!!! I replaced mine because they squeaked and they started squeaking more!!!!
